Two Big Rigs in Multi-Vehicle Collisions, Causing Fatalities

December 15, 2023 Firm News

Tragic events unfolded near Exit 77 on Interstate 85 in Alabama on December 11, triggering a chain reaction of crashes that left two individuals dead and brought traffic to a standstill. According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, two people lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries in crashes involving big rigs on Monday morning.

The first crash claimed the life of 40-year-old Byungock Shim from Auburn, Alabama. The second crash, involving two powerful 18-wheeler trucks, resulted in the death of 34-year-old Jonathon Bennett Kelly from Wadesboro, North Carolina. These crashes at Mile Marker 77 were part of a chain reaction stemming from an earlier incident at Mile Marker 74-75.

The Lanett Police Department, along with various emergency response teams, responded to the multiple vehicle accidents on I-85 Southbound from Mile Marker 74 – 77. Upon arrival, first responders discovered multiple collisions at Mile Marker 77, with the devastating impact of two massive 18-wheeler trucks involved. The accidents at Mile Marker 77 were connected to the earlier crash at Mile Marker 74-75.

In the initial collision at approximately 6:15 in the morning, Shim lost his life. Minutes later, the second deadly crash occurred as vehicles slowed down to navigate around the wreckage, involving the colossal force of at least two 18-wheelers and claiming another life.

The cleanup efforts have resulted in the closure of Interstate 85 South around exit 77, causing a significant traffic backup for several miles, underscoring the sheer impact of the two 18-wheeler trucks involved in the fatal accidents.
