How Often Do FedEx Trucks Crash? Causes and 2026 FMCSA Data
FedEx is one of the largest commercial carriers in the United States, operating hundreds of thousands of vehicles across multiple divisions. With that scale comes an unavoidable reality: crashes happen. But how often, and why?
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SAFER system, FedEx operates through three main carrier entities. FedEx Express alone reported over 129,000 drivers and logged more than 4.3 billion miles in 2024. FedEx Ground reported nearly 128,000 drivers, while FedEx Freight operates a fleet of over 17,600 power units.
In the 24-month period ending April 21, 2026, FedEx Express was involved in 2,970 reportable crashes across the US, 77 of them fatal, 1,016 involving injuries, and 1,877 requiring a tow. FedEx Freight recorded 624 crashes over the same general window, including 23 fatal and 201 injury crashes.
A smaller FedEx Ground subsidiary reported 25 crashes during a comparable period. Importantly, the FMCSA notes that these figures reflect carrier involvement only, with no determination of fault.
Common causes behind FedEx truck crashes nationally include driver fatigue, improper turns, speeding, and distracted driving — factors that apply across the commercial trucking industry. The recent Highway 53 crash in Idaho, where a FedEx driver turned left into oncoming traffic, reflects one of the most frequently reported crash patterns involving delivery vehicles.
When a crash involves a commercial carrier like FedEx, the aftermath can be overwhelming for those hurt. Medical bills, missed work, and unanswered questions about what went wrong can pile up quickly.
