Multi-Vehicle Crash Involves a Big Rig U-Turn in NC

A major collision on US 74 East in Columbus County, North Carolina on February 8, 2024, involved a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles, according to local news reports. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. when the tractor-trailer attempted a U-turn, colliding with a pickup truck. This initial collision resulted in a black sedan rear-ending a gray sedan that had come to a stop in the congestion.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP) confirmed that the tractor-trailer’s U-turn into the path of the pickup truck triggered the subsequent accidents. The impact caused substantial damage, requiring the pickup truck’s driver to be hospitalized at Novant NHRMC.

The NCHP charged the tractor-trailer driver for Failure to Yield Right of Way. Commercial truck drivers, and motor carriers, are supposed to be taught and trained to not make U-turns. The time for a commercial truck to make a U-turn, along with other factors makes u turns dangerous.
