Idaho State Police Respond to 10-Vehicle Pileup in Construction Zone
On October 1, 2023, at approximately 2:12 p.m., Idaho State Police (ISP) responded to a 10-vehicle pileup in a construction zone on Interstate 84 west of Mountain Home, according to available information.
ISP investigators determined that a 36-year-old man from Auburn, Washington, was driving a 2015 Volvo semi-tractor westbound on I-84 when he failed to stop in time for slowed traffic approaching the construction zone. The semi-tractor struck nine other vehicles, including a 2022 Freightliner semi-tractor pulling a commercial trailer driven by a 74-year-old man from Boise, according to available information.
The 74-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman driving a Kia were both transported to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries, according to available information. The other drivers involved in the crash apparently were not injured. ISP says traffic was backed up for approximately four and a half hours as crews responded to the crash and cleared the scene.
According to Idaho State Police, the 36-year-old driver of the Volvo semi-tractor was cited for following too closely. ISP investigators are also looking into whether other factors, such as distracted driving or fatigue, may have contributed to the crash.
ISP is reminding drivers to be extra cautious when driving through construction zones. Drivers should slow down and leave extra space between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them. They should also be prepared for sudden stops and lane changes.
