Five Die in South Carolina Commercial Truck Crash

March 13, 2024 Firm News

A horrific accident on Interstate 26 in South Carolina claimed the lives of five individuals on February 24, 2024. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported the crash occurred near mile marker 12 shortly before 9:30 pm.

Initial reports indicate that a westbound commercial car hauler struck the rear of a 2022 Toyota sedan. The impact caused the car hauler to cross the median and cable barrier, entering the eastbound lanes. It then collided head-on with a 2024 Honda sedan traveling east.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger confirmed the tragic loss of life included three children and two adults, all members of the same family. The deceased from the Honda were identified as 14-year-old Ashton Isaiah Olley, 11-year-old Jaicurious Treyvon Gist, and 8-year-old Jalecia Andrea Gist, siblings. Their aunt, 36-year-old Ashia Michelle Ballenger, also perished in the crash. The fifth victim, believed to be the grandfather of the children and Ms. Ballenger’s father, is awaiting positive identification through DNA testing.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the critical importance of safe driving practices, especially for commercial vehicle operators. The immense size and weight of these trucks pose a significant risk of catastrophic accidents, not only in direct collisions but also in triggering secondary incidents involving other vehicles. Ensuring the safety of everyone on the road requires responsible driving behavior from all motorists, including professional truck drivers.
