FedEx Truck Overturns on Honda Accord, Killing Three in Lancaster County
On Saturday, July 20, 2024, a tragic commercial truck accident occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Penn Township, Lancaster County. The collision, which happened just before 4:30 am, a FedEx truck overturned on top of a Honda Accord, claiming the lives of three individuals.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, located nearly three miles east of the Lebanon-Lancaster interchange north of Manheim, according to State Police Cpl. Richard Levan, the FedEx truck had overturned, pinning the Honda Accord beneath it. All three occupants of the Honda Accord were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said that 43-year-old Donnell Hickson and his children, 18-year-old Decir Hickson and an 11-year-old girl, were in a Honda Accord going along the toll road. In a series of events not clear right now, a FedEx tractor-trailer somehow overturned, landing on the Honda and crushing it. Due to this, Donnell Hickson, Decir Hickson, and the young girl were killed. The truck driver was taken from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries.
This incident occurred during the “danger zone” known to FEDEX and the trucking industry. According to evidence proved in Jim Scherr’s famous jury trial against FedEx in New Mexico, danger zone driving (between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.) is the most dangerous time for truck collisions, causing serious bodily injury and death.
What to Do After a FedEx Semi-Truck Accident
In the unfortunate event of being injured in a collision with a FedEx truck or commercial tractor-trailer, it is crucial to have experienced legal representation to navigate the complexities of the law following your FedEx semi-truck accident.
Preserving evidence is needed immediately, including information from the FedEx driver’s cell phone, electronic recordings, black box (electronic control module), all video and audio from the onboard cameras (VEDR), driver’s log of hours and inspections, and driver qualification file.
On top of that, scene photos and scene surveillance video and photos, witness contact information, and contact with law enforcement and first responders can provide vital evidence. In a wrongful death claim, immediate legal assistance is needed in understanding the law on who is entitled to bring a claim and for what, and where, as well as probate proceedings.
