FedEx Truck Crashes into House, Driver Accused of DUI
A FedEX delivery driver in Louisiana faces accusations of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol following his crash in a FedEx delivery truck.
According to the Houma Police Department, the driver was operating a FedEx truck when it collided with a home on Mary Hughes Drive on March 26, 2024.
Police reports indicate that the truck veered off the road, crashing into the front of the residence.
The driver, identified as 31-year-old Michael Smith, reportedly failed a sobriety test conducted at the scene. Additionally, authorities discovered Smith in possession of an open alcoholic beverage, marijuana, and tramadol, an opioid pain-relief medication.
Following his refusal to cooperate with officers and refusal to enter a patrol car, Smith was apprehended by Houma police. He has since been booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on multiple charges, including drug possession, reckless operation, DWI, and resisting an officer.
FedEx trucks and drivers are required to comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety safety standards to protect the public, as well as the driver, the equipment and load. For the most part, FedEx delivery trucks begin each trip and end each trip at a FedEx facility. Generally, Delivery trucks are loaded with packages at the facility, and leave each secure facility through gates.
A FedEx driver who consumed alcohol, or drugs, or both is dangerous. Reasonable supervision and control should have prevented this incident in its entirety.
