Fatality Caused by Big Rig Crash Spilling Cooking Oil on Pennsylvania Freeway
In Pennsylvania, a big rig truck accident spilled vegetable oil all over the roadway and triggered a fatal accident in the same region. In Dauphin County, at exit 47, there were multiple crashes this week including the tractor-trailer accident that spilled oil.
The initial crash happened when a disabled vehicle in the left lane was hit by the big rig and several other vehicles, according to a PennDOT spokesperson. That accident did not have injuries, but a related accident a few hours later proved fatal, according to available information.
In the first accident, boxes of cooking oil fell from the truck and leaked all over the road. This triggered a multiple-vehicle pileup with cars crashing into the back of the truck, according to available information. Storm drains then carried the vegetable oil down the road. Then, several other accidents happened directly following that crash, according to PennDOT.
A passenger vehicle struck the trailer of a tractor-trailer that was stopped in the left lane in the backlog. The driver of the passenger vehicle, a 41-year-old man, was killed in the crash. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash happened around mile marker 50 shortly after 9 a.m.
Police say that traffic was heavy in the area because of the slippery conditions caused by the leaked cooking oil at the time of the accident.
