At 22, James Scherr Became the Youngest El Paso Lawyer
James Scherr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Scherr. began his career as an attorney at the age of 22, becoming the youngest lawyer in El Paso and one of the youngest in the United States.
Scherr was sworn in as an attorney at the Court of Civil Appeals by Chief Justice Stephen Preslar, and Associate Justices William E. Ward and Max N. Osborn. A 1971 graduate of Coronado High School, Scherr earned his BA degree from UT at Austin and his law degree from the University of Houston law school in just over four years. He passed the Texas State Bar Exam with a score of 85, which is 10 points above passing. He started his practice with his uncle, attorney Carl Friedman, in El Paso.
While working his way through school by clerking for several prominent Houston law firms, “Though I have traveled across Texas and lived in most of the largest cities, I came home to El Paso to begin my practice, close to my family and friends,” Scherr said.
