A Joliet Big Rig Collision Claims the Life of Illinois Woman

December 11, 2023 Firm News

The Joliet Police Department confirmed the passing of 25-year-old Joseil Escalonda-Gomez, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision with a semi-trailer in early December. The incident unfolded at the entrance to downtown Joliet, Illinois, marking a somber moment for the community.

Escalonda-Gomez occupied the rear seat of a Volkswagon Passat, which was occupied by four individuals from Joliet and one from El Paso, Texas (home of Jim Scherr), according to official reports. The collisions occurred at 5:12 a.m. when law enforcement responded to the accident at the intersection of South Chicago Street and McDonough Street. The VW, piloted by a different 28-year-old Joliet resident, was eastbound on McDonough Street.

As the Volkswagen crossed the intersection, it collided with the trailer of an International Harvester semi-truck, heading southbound on South Chicago Street. The crash was severe, leading to Escalonda-Gomez’s hospitalization at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where she tragically lost her life.

The tragic death of the passenger leaves her family grieving.  As a passenger, she probably has no fault in causing the collision, however, the semi and the car driver may have fault in causing this unnecessary death.  Preservation of evidence and obtaining factual details of what caused the crash is important for any wrongful death lawsuit that may be initiated by the family
